Deaths involving police
Deaths involving the Police can occur in a variety of different ways.
- Police cell or within the police station itself.
- During arrest or restraint, whether it be in a public place or at their own home.
- Whilst dealing with an incident and as a result of their actions/omissions in respect of handling the incident, a death has occurred.
We will contact the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the Police Force concerned and the Coroner to inform them that we are involved with the case, ensuring that any phone calls or documentation are directed through us. From then on, we will liaise with all of the authorities on your behalf, allowing you and your family the time to grieve and to come to terms with the death itself.
At Watson Woodhouse, one of our specialist Inquest solicitors will offer you advice and assistance and if you wish, will represent you throughout these proceedings. We will endeavour to provide you with detailed explanations of police procedures and police policy documentation, as they can sometimes be difficult to understand.
We will also guide you through the post-mortem report and any medical evidence that is issued, ensuring that you understand exactly what occurred. We will also be able to advise as to whether or not you will need any independent experts to assist in the investigation.
